TAMPA—Time has run out on Matt Bryant.
Tampa Bay’s veteran kicker knows he must overcome the challenge of a sore hamstring and make his preseason debut Friday night to have any chance of retaining his job.
Mike Nugent, signed as a free agent to challenge Bryant, hasn’t dazzled anyone, but this hasn’t been a competition because Bryant is giving the Bucs little alternative at this point. He will be released Saturday unless he suits up against the Texans and gives the organization a reason to keep him over Nugent.
Bryant was initially shocked that the Bucs offered Nugent a generous contract and he hasn’t been the same since the former second-round pick of the Jets arrived in Tampa.
The time for pouting is over.
He’ll likely get an NFL job elsewhere, but if Bryant truly wants to remain a Buccaneer, he’ll take his best shot Friday and give Tampa Bay coaches and management something to think about before making Saturday’s cuts to the 53-man roster limit.
