For the second time in the past three years, Brandon’s wrestling team produced an individual champion at the prestigious Super 32 Challenge.
Senior Henry Chirino claimed one of the coveted belts at this year’s national event, which was held on Saturday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center in Greensboro, N.C.
Chirino defeated Donovan Green of Timber Creek (Fla.) 2-1 to win the heavyweight (285 pounds) division. Chirino went 5-0 at the event.
Chirino is a transfer from Hialeah American. Last year, he went 40-0 on his way to winning the Class 3A individual heavyweight state title.
Chirino was one of four Eagles wrestlers to place in the top eight of their respective weight class at the prestigious event.
Sophomore Rossi Bruno and freshman Kevin Norstrem finished sixth and seventh, respectively, at 119 pounds, while senior Joe Cozart took fifth at 152 pounds.
Former standout Eric Grajales was the last Brandon wrestler to win a title at the Super 32. Grajales was a two-time winner at the event, claiming titles in 2005 and 2007.
