Bloomingdale Little League’s Savannah Bradley had 14 strikeouts while allowing only two hits, and Bloomingdale scored seven runs in the fifth inning to win the District 13 Major softball All-Star Championship with a 9-1 win against East Bay 9-1 on Tuesday night.
“It was quite dominant,” Bloomingdale coach Mike Bell said. “She struck out the side for the first three innings. It was a pretty dominant performance on her part.”
Bradley also had a 2-RBI double that opened up the scoring in Bloomingdale’s big fifth inning. Leading 2-1 going into the fifth, the seven-run inning put the game away. It wasn’t the first time Bloomingdale had a late-inning outburst in the tournament.
“We got off to a slow start,” Bell said. “But in the fifth we scored seven runs to put it out of reach. We did the same thing in the win against East Point, scored nine runs in the fifth to put that game out of reach. Start slow but a couple of times through the lineup we were able to get a few things going.”
Bloomingdale opens sectional play this Saturday with a double-header. Last year, the Bloomingdale Major team fell at this stage as Plant City Little League advanced, but Bell thinks this year’s team has better pitching depth, which should provide a big boost.
“We think we have a lot deeper pitching staff than we did a year ago,” Bell said. “We feel that’s going to bode well for us in sectionals. ... It’s a good thing we’ve got the pitching that we’ve got.”
