Southeast Basketball Academy Florida director Mike McManamey said the organization will name its Thanksgiving Fall Classic after former Bloomingdale star Theo Smalling next year.
Smalling scored 1,239 points while at Bloomingdale and was the starting senior captain on the Hampton University men’s basketball team.
He died Oct. 26 in Virginia, three days after his 22nd birthday. Police say Smalling was shot shortly after midnight Oct. 24 after celebrating his birthday. He was shot in the abdomen in the parking lot of a nightclub after another man mishandled a firearm, police say.
Police have charged 21-year-old Dominique Devon Smith with reckless handling of a firearm. Police have so far treated the incident as an accident.
