It appears that Dan Boyle has agreed to waive his no-trade clause and will be dealt to the San Jose Sharks. TSN is reporting the deal is all but done, just waiting on the proper paperwork.
As of late Thursday, San Jose was considered to be the front runner for Boyle. The Sharks were in the running to acquire him at the trade deadline before Boyle signed a six-year, $40 million extension in February. At that time, the deal to acquire Boyle would have seen Tampa Bay land defenseman Matt Carle and possibly forward Devin Setoguchi.
Now TSN is reporting that Brad Lukowich is part of the deal with Tampa Bay receiving Carle, a first round pick and a fourth round pick along with a unnamed prospect.
This isn’t the end of Tampa Bay’s retooling of the roster. The Lightning were in the running to sign defenseman Rob Blake until San Jose offered him a $5 million contract yesterday, which is a sure sign that Tampa Bay wants to add some sort of a veteran defensive presences on the blue line.
Assuming this deal goes through as reported, here is the Lightning defense: Filip Kuba, Paul Ranger, Shane O’Brien, Matt Carle, Alex Picard, Matt Smaby, Mike Lundin and Janne Niskala. It’s obvious this isn’t going to be the group that mans the blue line when the season opens in October. I think that Kuba might still be a target to be traded, but if he’s not, then my bet on the opening night lineup will be - Kuba, Ranger, O’Brien, Carle, Picard, TBA.

With all the added forwards you don’t really need a Dan Boyle in this lineup. Its unfortunate for those who are Boyle fans but hockey is a business and there is a reason for this trade. What we need now is a couple of really good stay-at-home defensemen to help protect the net. Keep in mind Boyle is not a defensive-defensman and he is on the small side. Bring on a couple of 6’4” 230lb solid d-men and we will be ready to roll.

Just a minute,I have to pick this crow from between my teeth. After I thought I made an inciteful observation(SJ signed Blake, therefore no Boyle signing),I was shown to know not of what I speak. Anyway, really sorry to see Dan go. I thought he was terrific for us. I can only hope that we are getting fair value in our transaction, It sounds like we are.The emotional attachment we have to our players only shows the passion of our great fans.I’m disappointed, but will be in my season seat when the first puck is dropped.Good luck to Dan and good luck to us.

Remember that were heavy rumors swirling about Marty at the deadline. Wouldn’t be suprised if westart hearing them again.

I am and have been a season ticket holder, not as long as some, because I didn’t live near here, but if this team does what it appears to be doing, making one heck of an offense. It should be fun to watch.
I wish Boyle and his family all the best and will dread playing against him.
I will remain a ticket holder even if we do as bad as last year, I love the game of hockey LIVE and the Bolts are the best show in town. Next time don’t lie and tell the fans that a player is not leaving, just say we are still working on the lineup, or something to that effect, I think that is what most fans are not happy with. as well as treating Boyle like this, he deserved better, (its obvious feaster has no imput anymore because he loved Boyle)

bring on rfa Bouwmeester next, last year made $2.25/$2.50 mil and according to this chart posted it would cost Tampa only a 1st and a 3rd round pick to sign him to an offers heet if Florida did not match....lol
Offer—compensation
$863,156 or below—none
More than $863,156 to $1,307,812—third-round pick
More than $1,307,812 to $2,615,625—second-round pick
More than $2,615,625 to $3,923,437—first-round and third-round picks
More than $3,923,437 to $5,231,249—first-round, second-round and third-round picks
More than $5,231,249 to $6,539,062—two first-round picks, one second- and one third-round pick
More than $6,539,062—four first-round picks.

ALL of my respect for Oren Koules is now lost. They gave us their word, Boyle will not be traded, the team wont be moved, Melrose wanted Boyle to play 25 minutes a night for him. SO MUCH FOR THAT! So whats next are we going to become the Winnipeg Lightning? This is absurd and uncalled for. So where are we going to trade Marty to? Boyle for Carle? CARLE?! One word to explain this. Ridiculous- causing or worthy of ridicule or derision; absurd; preposterous; laughable: a ridiculous plan.

I hate this part of sports.
Good Luck Danny Boyle. Thank you, the Tampa Bay hockey community will never forget you.

I for one will hate to see Boyle go, even Lukowich he has a lot of experience to aid the locker room, I hope they got a kings ransom for the two of them. The younger Carle, has some talent, but they were not going to trade Boyle for one who was just as talented as he, (they couldnt afford them, that is the whole reason for the trade)Plus Melrose may see something in Carle, remember he has had years of scouting players.
If these moves get us deep in the playoffs than all will be forgiven, if they don’t then we will all be ticked off wondering what if.
This is a business and as much as we like or dont like what they are doing, we are just spectators.

Here is the link for the ESPN version of the story, which is just a rehash of the TSN story that broke earlier.

Danny and Luke to SJ for Carle, a 1st and a 4th rounder. Or something to that effect.

Tactically, a ridiculous decision. I like OB quite a bit, but if he is the guy bringing the puck out of the Bolt end, get ready for a year of intense forechecking everytime the Bolts have the puck in their zone. But at least we have 265 forwards. Melrose, is was and will remain an unjustifiably arrogant blowhard who has simply never displayed tactical acumen. There is a reason no team has seriously approached him until the equally full of crap OK found a bond with this guy.
Been a season ticketholder since day one. Even during the Art williams days, I’ve never been so inclined to not renew.

As much as I like Boyle, I love the Lightning. You can’t stop liking a whole team and say that you’re not going to watch or be a fan faithful because they parted ways with a player. That would not be fair to players like V4 or Marty. Hey, they haven’t traded either of them, yet.

OK has and will keep doing what is the correct moves for their style of play they are going to put into action! Moves are not done yet so do not pass judgement until training camp opens as there will be MANY different D men by then! GO BOLTS AND GOOD JOB OK HOCKEY!

Tim, you’re going to stop being a fan of the team over this? Pathetic.
Posted by Kevin, Naples on 07/04 at 10:23 AM
Geografer, they always said they “liked” Dan, but they never said that they wouldn’t trade him. OK did say, for sure, that they would “never move this team. I hate Las Vegas” is what he said.

I’m not ready to condemn OK hockey, just yet anyway. We don’t know what’s really happening, just what we can speculate and what is reported (lots of it very inaccurate) in the media. We don’t really know what else the team has in the cooker right now. More assets will be moved, some whether we like it or not. It’s like a chess game where one move sets up another move then another. I agree that trading Danny Boyle is a tough pill to swallow (for me anyway), but I am inclined to do as others suggested and wait and see what happens over the next couple of months.

This gives me such a sick feeling. Bad for the team and just bad as a “people” decision. After all the adversity last year I wanted to see Dan Boyle come back healthy and help us into the playoffs this year.
Very glad I did not renew my season tickets now...I’ll be watching some other teams on Center Ice instead.
OK: this is *NOT* OK!

The sky is falling!!!

That’s what I’ve been saying. If we can’t believe OK to keep to his word, how can we trust him to keep the team in Tampa????
Posted by Geografer, Spokane, WA on 07/04 at 10:02 AM
Oh wait - I forgot to add Carle.
Doesnt’ really improve it much though does it?

I’m sorry guys, but this deal is just all kinds of stupid.
Hopefully this’ll lead to a signing of a very solid, yet much cheaper D-man. Because as we stand now, Kolzig might even have to work harder than how he did with the Caps....
Posted by Bill Berg, Blairsville Ga. on 07/04 at 09:59 AM
We will wait to see the exact trade. To shed all the commented $ for 6 years was a BIG plus for the BOLTS. If the deal with Boyle was only for 2-3 years they more tahn likely would not have mad the trade. OK has done a good Job so lets wait and see when offical who is involved in the trade and then who OK may also plug in at D.
Posted by Geografer, Spokane, WA on 07/04 at 09:59 AM
So here is the defence has it stands now (sure makes me feel good) -
Filip Kuba
Mike Lundin
Shane O’Brien
Alexandre Picard
Paul Ranger
Matt Smaby

Not to mention that Danny could have gotten even more money as a free agent than the hometown discount he took for Tampa.

I’m starting to lose respect for this new ownership! Getting rid of Dan is a BIG mistake! Bonehead move!
