Brandon senior catcher Roderick Shoulders became just the second Hillsborough County senior baseball player selected in the 2010 MLB draft when the Boston Red Sox selected him in the 20th round (623rd overall) Tuesday afternoon.
Shoulders, who missed most of his junior season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum, bounced back nicely in 2010 and hit .377 with five doubles, four home runs and 27 RBIs for the Eagles.
Shoulders, who has signed with State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, and Brooks-DeBartolo infielder Jadamion Williams (10th round; Minnesota Twins) are the only Hillsborough County seniors to be selected in the draft thus far. However, Shoulders is the second player with local ties to be selected by the Red Sox in this year’s draft. Land O’ Lakes right-handed pitcher Jason Garcia was Boston’s 17th round pick (533rd overall).
