Bolts get bagged

Posted Oct 26, 2008 by Erik Erlendsson

Not much of a surprise, but the Lightning didn’t exactly go out for a Sunday skate today, not after the effort they put forth against San Jose on Saturday.

In hockey terms, what Barry Melrose put the team through is what’s called a bag skate (so called because players skate until their bags fall off).

There was very little pucks used through the 45-minute, except for some early drills and battle drills. The rest of the time it was guys skating back and forth from line to line.

The only players exempt were the goaltenders, injured forwards Ryan Craig and Radim Vrbata plus Mark Recchi, who was excused for family reasons.

“The message is pretty clear, if you’re not going to work at night you are going to work during the day,” Melrose said.

I’ve never experienced what the players go through on practices like this, but it sure doesn’t look fun. But Ryan Malone did his best to keep up a good attitude during the whole thing.

“You have to or else its going to feel like it will last longer than it does,” Malone said.

Lightning general manager Brian Lawton said he was disappointed with the effort and Tuesday’s game in Toronto is a critical game in terms of how the team answers. But he said there is no kind of situation right now that require thoughts of changing personnel.

This is reassuring to hear. Melrose should have ran one of these after we played like a juniors team in Prague, but better late than never. The team is playing with zero heart, passion, or accountability right now.

Melrose has got to get a grip on this locker room. This can be a deadly team as we saw a bit against Minnesota, but only when they all are willing to work hard and believe in the system. Tuesday is a critical test.

The “blah, blah, blah hand” goes up anymore when someone from the org an iz ation speaks. If reports are true that “Cowboy Barrie” is going into the locker room between periods and diagraming plays, the team is setting the standard for a new low.

This season is starting to be a clone of the 98 Bolts. Which by the way was THE worst season in NHL history. Come on guys, get it turned around.

If Barrie is interfering, then the players don’t have confidence with Melrose.  From the lack of effort from practically everyone, there is a serious problem.  These guys have the talent to do much more, but they aren’t trying at all.

Can anyone say Art Williams?

i think melrose is the problem right now. it shouldn’t be this difficult to score when we have these kinds of forwards. there are a few problems though. the owners are close with melrose. so it’s going to take a lot for them to fire him. secondly, there aren’t many coaches still out there. maybe ted nolan?

It is way too early in the season to be calling for the coach’s head.  Let’s calm down.  It is going to take some time for this team to mesh.

Erik,  any truth to what was mentioned on Hockey Night iN Canada last night between the 2nd and 3rd periods that part of the ownership group likes to draw up plays on the team blackboard in the lockeroom.  What the heck is going on down there…. HNC made it sound as if Melrose could be hitting the road by November 15.. Can you commment on this ... Thanks

For whatever reason, this group of guys isn’t bringing it to the rink every minute, every shift, every game. There is something wrong behind the scenes. Maybe the rumor about Barrie doing some locker room coaching is true. At any rate, thank goodness I didn’t waste my hard earn money on going to that game!

The Bolts are playing like that LAME useless bobblehead they gave out last nite..I think Melrose is putting too much pressure on them to win..so he dont look like a dope for leaving broadcasting…

Hey Joyce, I offered 301-6800 for you to call if you are really unhappy about Len or Barry or Oren or Tom or Brian.  Do it!  Up until then, we all know you cannot do any better than him, or even come close to his credentials. So shut up already.  If in your words do not have the cajones to do it, let me know what your email or cell # or home # or your wife’s # is and I will make sure one of them contacts you.  I am waiting.

Come to think, since you have all these negative feelings about Melrose, is he one of the unwanted members of your family like you have referenced me?  Or he is another one of you sons?  If so, I need to check out having a relationship with Thai women

After witnessing the destruction of the bolts, you have to look a few things.
yes we have two good goalies
yes the most veteran players are playing hard….

thats about it. The players seem to play about one period at most, then they just start lazily skating around for the rest of the game, there is no drive to the puck, and very little hard hitting hockey, when there is the briefest of moments when someone hits somebody and drives to the puck, it gets the crowd up for a few seconds.

This team is showing no motivation or grit, save the goalies, Recchi, Gratton, Arty and Malone. Where is the drive, the passion, the energy. Not in the bolts lineups.

The coach just stands around with his arms crossed and doesnt say much (big change from Torts).

At 20 games if they dont have 10 wins, I think there is a change needed at the helm.

I know they have to build a chemistry but when the players arent even skating hard to get the puck or allowing the puck to get stolen most of the time.

The defense we knew is young, but they are coming together better now that Ranger is in the mix.

Vinny is the Captain, he needs to step up and be the example for the player that everyone should be, most of the time he looks as if he is just out for a sunday skate about 90% of the game.

Cmon bolts, get it together, I will still come and watch but it loses its fun if we keep losing, I would feel better at least knowing we are in there fighting to win. Now it just looks like we are here to practice.

QFT.

The defense we had last year would dominate this defense any day of the week. The best part is we gave up our gem defensive pieces that no one took any time to look at and got Meszaros the clown and Carle the where am I?

Here’s a funny stat, as of 10/27/08, Filip Kuba has 11 assists. The Tampa Bay Lightning have 11 goals.
