Rebecca Bodine of Tarpon Springs and Garrett Betsarakis of St. Petersburg advanced to the semifinals of their respective draws at the Florida Open Tennis Championship in Fort Myers on Tuesday.
Bodine upset girls under-18 division No.1 seed Amy Simidian of Naples 6-2, 6-1 to move into the semifinals. No.9 seed Bodine, who lost in the first round of the USTA National Open in her last tournament, will face Bianca Sanon of Plantation for a place in the final.
Betsarakis advanced in the boys under-16 division with a 6-2, 7-5 win against Alexander Buzzi of Key Biscayne. He will face Jeremy Efferding of Lake Worth in the semifinals after Efferding beat Tampa’s Michael Alford 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
As with Alford, Tampa’s other players didn’t fare well on Tuesday, with the trio of Tyler Snook, Mitch Wong and Joel Samaha all falling in straight sets in the round of 16 of the boys under-18 division. Snook fell 7-6, 7-5 to Luka Stanic of Boca Raton, Wong lost 6-4, 6-3 to Matthew Braunworth of Boca Raton and Samaha lost 6-2, 6-3 to John Collins, of Bowie, Md.
Tampa’s Kelly Sullivan also fell in the girls under-16 quarterfinals, as the No.4 seed lost 6-4, 6-4 to unseeded Nelo Phiri of Yonkers, New York.
