PORT CHARLOTTE - The morning’s rain has backed down to a drizzle, but it’s very windy at Charlotte Sports Park, and the Rays’ intrasquad game scheduled for 9:30 a.m. will not start on time.
Manager Joe Maddon walked by the media room a few minutes ago and made a sound effect that referenced the blustery conditions. Although the Rays think there will be enough of a break in the foul weather to get some of their intrasquad game in starting at around 11, they’re advising that fans not come down. There’s just too much rain in the area.
The Rays open Grapefruit League play tomorrow in Sarasota against the Orioles. Tampa Bay’s first exhibition game lineup will include Ben Zobrist at second, B.J. Upton in center, Dioner Navarro at catcher, new catcher Kelly Shoppach at designated hitter and Jason Bartlett at Shortstop. James Shields and Matt Garza each will pitch.
