Blake’s 56-53 win over Palmetto in the Class 4A Region 3 quarterfinals on Thursday not only marked the program’s first playoff win since the school reopened in 1997. It was also the first playoff victory for head coach Winston Davis in his 33 years of coaching.
Davis was the head coach at East Bay for 24 years and took the Indians to the playoffs in 1998. They lost in the Class 5A quarterfinals to Punta Gorda Charlotte, 75-50. During his nine years as coach at Blake, he’s taken the Yellow Jackets to the playoffs three times, including this season. In 2004 and 2009, Blake lost in the first round.
“It’s good to get a decent win for our coach,” said Blake junior point guard Andre Smith, who is also Davis’s grandnephew. “He hasn’t won in the playoffs in a while.”
“I’m happy he’s happy,” senior center Michael McFarland said. “To see that smile on his face after the game was special.”
Blake (25-4), ranked No. 5 in the final Class 4A state poll, will host Lakewood in the semifinals Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Davis was a standout guard for Blake in the late 60s. His senior year, he was transferred to Plant because of intergration. Between 1968-1971, he scored 1,362 career points.

Blake won but look at the tape of the game it was 11.9 second left and Palmetto coach call for a time-out and the floor fill with fan a technical foul was the call and the call was not given. Who care if this coach have not been there for years they going off some dumb call by those official. Look at it we had the game and they start calling some ! call on Palmetto IF they make it next year they will see the Red, Black and White again.
