B.J. Never Considered Holdout

Tampa Bay FB B.J. Askew may have the secret formula necessary to renegotiate a contract with GM Bruce Allen - don’t say a word.

Bucs QB Jeff Garcia has hinted toward holding out if he does not have a new contract in place soon, RB Earnest Graham is voicing his contract displeasure by not showing up for voluntary team offseason workouts, while DE Greg White wants Tampa Bay to extend him a better contract.

However, Askew never voiced his concerns and was recently rewarded with a contract extension. The deal brought the total value of Askew’s contract to $8.6 million and called for the six-year veteran to receive $2.2 million in guaranteed payouts, including a $2 million signing bonus. It also should keep Askew in a Bucs uniform through the 2012 season.

“All I can really ask the guys [who want better contracts] is to just show up. Keep working out,” Askew said. “The theory behind it all is you hold out, you do all these things, and then all of a sudden the team will reward you. Me and my agent had a long talk about it, and I even went up and told Coach [Jon] Gruden that I’m not going to sit out and I’m not going to miss any time.

“I wanted it [new deal] done, but I just had to let him know that it wasn’t the route I was going. I told him I really appreciated him and I just kept working. I knew it would take care of itself.”

funny thing, greg white was working minimum wage at best buy about 10 months ago. Now he is making roughly 10 times that playing football. Wake up man, ur making ten times more that what you used to play pro ball not arena football anymore. You show promise as a pass rusher for about 3 quarters of a season but you still didnt do that great against the run. Now tell me why we should pay a 28yr old rookie, possible one year wonder, currently one dimensional player who we have as an exclusive rights free agent for the next 3 years the money he wants? Trust me he wont holdout, no way he is going back to best buy

Mitch R.,
You are absolutely correct. These last couple of weeks have been the most boring reports. There has to be something more interesting to report then what there has been. Come on Tampa Trib. give us some video footage on our rookies at camp or something,ANYTHING!!!! S*%T

I can’t believe there’s no other information our crack(head) reporters can give us.  For god’s sake, where’s the insight, where’s the “local” knowledge.  In the last 3 weeks all I’ve heard is crap about holdouts, potential holdouts and non-holdouts.  Is anything else going on at One Buc Place?  How’s Dexter Jacksons leg?  What about Sabby’s rehab?  Any movement on Simms’ situation?  What about Gaines Adams offseason workouts?  Any word on Luke McCown?  Isn’t there an Editor at the Tampa Trib making these guys work?  Hey Ira where’ve you been?  You alive or busy downing burgers?

The long term lock up of Askew is a great thing. He is very important for the Bucs as a run and pass blocker.  If you have never watched this guy as a lead blocker then please pay attention this year. Askew rarely misses his assignment and is a huge reason EG had a good season when Caddy went down.  I love the Bucs staying committed to the run game.  It will be fun to see who runs behind him this year.

Atta boy, BJ! much respect for Askew! like i said before, even Brian Kelly sucked it up and did it the right way. I’ve lost a lot of respect for Garcia...he is a notorious cry baby. I wonder how long before his daddy gets involved in the whole thing, as usual. I’m with Allen on tnis one.

I think Askew sets the example for the type of player we want on the Bucs. Bad attitudes and prima-donnas aren’t the makeup of championship caliber football teams. Shannon, those are two bad examples as Kelly hadn’t been real effective over the past couple of years and was negatively vocal towards the team while even Lynch will tell you that he didn’t know if he’d ever play again with that shoulder injury. I’m not saying there isn’t validity in taking a strong stance sometimes, but those are just bad examples. You hold the line in a positive way with a positive attitude and lead by example.

I agree with the Bucs’ decision to be cautious, and do not want us to just throw money at these guys with our depth, however to those who say the money will come if they are patient and just go to practice…
Brian Kelly, John Lynch -Lynch even offered to play for less, and still goes to the Pro Bowl as a Bronco…

Nuff Said…

It is okay for all these guys to ask for more money....it is their right. When I want a raise...I ask for it. However,I continue to work hard while my superiors think about the request. If not for the Bucs,Ernest Graham would be unemployed. No one was jumping up and down to sign him. The same can be said for Greg White...as for Jeff, there was no one beating his door down either. It is time for these players to be loyal to the Bucs as well as to the fans!!!!!!! I’m sure that the money will come.

Drdneast, get a clue. Small Business is the backbone of this country. I’m glad your working at Burger King. keep up the good work. Thanks for getting off unemployment and lowering my rates.
Sincerely, Hayseed Greedhead

drdneast .... I agree with you in principle but there is a key difference here and that is that if I want more money, I don’t hold out by not showing up to work and I don’t make it public that I’m not happy.  I keep working hard but I make it very known to only my boss that I want to get ahead and I ask my boss what things I can do to get a promotion / more money and then hold him accountable personally when I accomplish the goal.  If my boss didn’t hold up his promise, then I look for work elsewhere.

I think that if all these so call football players just keep working, They will get their contracts done. What Iam so unhappy about these so call football players, Is that all their life, They had everything in front of them. What if Garcia , White and Graham these days went out to only get minimum wage income. I think the Coaches and the organizations will reward those players who don’t complain. Just be glad they have a job, there ten other players would love to just play for the minimum.

If both of you could spell, maybe you would earn higher incomes, or maybe its just easier to blame the man.

drdneast, You are absolutly right!

Admire his approach, but if the majority of people in Florida foolowed his example with their boss they would be making minimum wage. Owners of businesses in Florida are hayseed greedheads.
