Bishop McLaughlin junior catcher T.J. Wharton has become the first Division I commitment from the Hurricanes’ baseball program after verbally committed to the University of North Carolina Greensboro, athletic director Eddie Kenny announced Thursday.
Wharton, a two-year varsity starter, batted .428 with 29 RBI and two home runs as a sophomore in 2009 for Coach Nick Rodriguez’s Hurricanes.
Wharton joins a group of recent Bishop McLaughlin baseball players to continue their careers in college—Marcel Duarte (2008, Johns Hopkins; Taylor McGillis (2009, Saint Leo; Mike Gonzalez (2009, Carson Newman, and Jeff Pope (2009, Oglethorpe).
