Following his team’s loss to USF on Saturday, Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun called Bulls guard Dominique Jones a “terrific player.’’
Calhoun’s colleagues agree, naming Jones to the All-Big East first team on Sunday.
In voting by Big East coaches, Jones joined Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody, Georgetown’s Greg Monroe, Syracuse’s Wes Johnson, Villanova’s Scottie Reynolds and De’Sean Butler of West Virginia on the first team.
A junior from Lake Wales, Jones led a resurgent USF program to respectability in its fifth season in the Big East, winning the Big East scoring crown by averaging 23.2 points in league play. During USF’s school-record four-game Big East winning streak earlier this season, Jones averaged 37 points a game to garner national attention.
Overall, Jones is averaging 21.3 points and 6.4 rebounds heading into USF’s game against DePaul in the first round of the Big East Tournament on Tuesday. The Big East will announce its player of the year on Tuesday in New York.
