Big East, Big 12 appear set for Yankee Bowl

The Big East and Big 12 conferences are near finalizing an agreement to play in the new Yankee Bowl beginning in 2010.

The Big East would send its third or fourth selection to New York against likely the seventh selection from the Big 12. The bowl game would be played at the new Yankee Stadium with a seating capacity of about 47,000.

The Big 12’s Board of Directors is expected to approve adding the Yankee Bowl to the Big 12’s lineup in 2010-13, Big 12 spokesman Bob Burda said.

“That’s our intent,” Burda said. “All indications are we would add the Yankee Bowl to our lineup.”

Burda said it hasn’t been decided what specific selection the Yankee Bowl would get from the Big 12, but it “would be toward the bottom.”

The Big 12 has eight bowl affiliations in the current lineup and is expected to maintain at least that many in the new cycle running from 2010-13.

Last month, the Big East officially announced the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando would get the league’s second selection or Notre Dame once every four years if eligible beginning in 2010, taking the place of the current hybrid agreement with the Gator and the Sun bowls.

The Sun Bowl had an offer from the Big East to take the league’s third selection, but opted to take the fifth selection from the Atlantic Coast Conference, The Tampa Tribune reported.

The Meineke Car Care Bowl currently has the third selection from the Big East, but that could move down to fourth in the new lineup, or the Yankee and Meineke Car Care bowls could alternate between the third- and fourth-selections from 2010-13.

If the Big East adds the Yankee Bowl, the league’s new six-bowl lineup would likely consist of BCS, Champs (Orlando), Yankee (New York), Meineke Car Care (Charlotte, N.C.), Papajohns.com (Birmingham, Ala.) and St. Petersburg (St. Petersburg, Fla.).

Yankee Stadium officials have been seeking to add college football games at the new stadium and recently announced several future regular-season games, including Notre Dame-Army in 2010, Army-Rutgers in 2011, Army-Air Force in 2012 and Army-Boston College in 2014.

Hector, I am not sure about Notre Dame with Yankee bowl, but since Champs gets a shot at them, I believe Cotton Bowl does to, even if Yankee Bowl had a shot at them, they probably wouldn’t get them. I’ll try and find out.

Brett-thank you for updating us on the BE bowl situation.  From what you have gathered, is the Music City, Libery, and/or EagleBank totally out play?  Do you think we can pretty much bank on this as the new bowl line-up for the BE?  When do you expect the official announcements? Thanks!

Villecard, No idea on official announcements and yes, I think this pretty much seals the Big East bowl lineup. Big East commish John Marinatto had told me earlier this year the league was content with six bowl slots, so I don’t think you’ll see them add a seventh (unless it’s to help out a bowl as a back-up choice). With that said, Papajohns and St. Pete both were created by ESPN, in part for the Big East, so those guys are locked in. Meineke ain’t going anywhere and then add BCS, Champs and Yankee and you’re at six Big East bowls. By the way, good luck in Lexington this weekend.

as far as we know the opponents are as follows:
Champs vs. ACC
Yankee vs. Big 12
Meineke vs. ACC
PapaJohn’s vs. SEC
ST. Pete vs. C-USA

Brett, do you expect anything to change in regards to BE opponents?  Thanks!

Ville, you’ve got the opponents correct. Marinatto told me he wanted to play as many of the six BCS leagues as possible, so they’ll play BCS leagues in five of the six (if SEC qualifies enough for Papajohns). So I think it’s an upgrade from past years when Papajohns started out as BE vs. C-DOA and International is BE vs. MAC. So in essence, you’ve traded Champs for Gator/Sun and you’ve traded Yankee for International. I’d say that’s an upgrade.

Brett-thanks again for the replies.  We will need all the luck possible to beat UK this year as sad as that is to say. If Krags doesn’t win this one, he’s as good as gone.
