This could be a big day for tight ends at One Buc Place.
We know now that the Bucs have finalized the deal for tight end John Gilmore and the representatives for fellow tight end Ben Troupe are very hopeful Troupe will reach agreement on a contract today as well.
Troupe is at One Buc Place right now meeting with the Bucs and according to his representatives, he has no other visits lined up because he is hoping he can stay in Tampa Bay for good.
Gilmore, meanwhile, has agreed to terms on a three-year deal. Financial terms were not made available but the annual payouts figure to be for far more than the league minimum, which is what the Bears were offering.
The Bears offered Gilmore a three-year deal for league minimum salaries and a modest signing bonus, but the Bucs trumped that within minutes of the market opening up and immediately became the front runners for Gilmore’s services.
In Gilmore, 28, the Bucs get a superb pass protector and run blocker. He’s not an adept route runner or pass catcher but he tends to make plays in the red zone, where defenses tend to forget about him.
Troupe is more of a pass-catching tight end, a player along the lines of starter Alex Smith. Combined the three would give the Bucs a strong contingent of tight ends.
In other news we’re hearing the Bucs also have expressed interest in talking with wide receiver Bryant Johnson (Cardinals). Johnson is currently meeting with the Bills in Buffalo. If he leaves there without a deal, he may head to Tampa.
The Bucs may also be increasing their desire to speak with cornerback Jacques Reeves (Cowboys) after Drayton Florence left Tampa without reaching accord on a contract Friday.

I think we should go after Lito Sheppherd of the Eagles.
Now that they have Samuels they will probably be cutting Lito.

So much for the Bucs making a splash in free agency. Most of the big names they talked about have signed else where. What good is 40 million under the cap do you if your not going to spend it.

Everyone is talking about playmakers, why are the Bucs not interested in Randy Moss, the biggest playmaker in this free agent class by far? Make him an offer he can’t refuse, you have the money!

Good God, please do not sign Jacques Reeves!!!! This guy is a waste of space. If you ask any real Cowboys fan, they will tell you that he was the weak link on that defense. We don’t need anymore weak links. If anyone (like myself) thinks Brian Kelly got burned too much, Reeves get burned more.
We need a playmaking WR. Micheal Clayton has proven that you can’t gaurantee you will find one in the draft.

Bryant Johnson would be great. Jaques Reeves would be good too even though Drayton Florence is a better CB. Plus the Bucs have Phillip Buchannon who showed us all that he can be a starter in this league. Realistically, the Bucs just need a Nickle Back with Ronde and Phillip occupying the starting CB roles. Randall Gay would be a nice addition as well. As for the TE’s, they both sound a lot like Becht and Stevens. Only time will tell if this strategy pays off.

Strong contingent of TEs??? I’m not sold on that. There’s still no real threat at TE with these three guys. If Alex Smith is still the number one guy then we’re no better off than we were last year. Smith, Stevens, Becht or Smith, Troupe, Gilmore?? I’m not seeing any upgrade at all really.

Bucs, pay the money and sign randall gay he is the best corner available. You let a lto of qulaity prospects leave town thus far without a contract, he is coming monday...do not let him leave town w/o a bucs uni.

This is a big news for us here in Tampa getting 2 TEs in one day. We got one that is a superb pass protector and a run blocker which is Gilmore and Troupe which is a superb pass catching TE so which means we are set for TEs and all we need now is a running back and wide receivers to complete the offensive line scheme. Bringing Hackett or Johnson or even Chad Johnson that would be great!

Tampa has started the Free Agency decent but has not gone after the number 1 need, playmakers! Getting protection is big for getting garcia time so I liked the signing of Faine. But Tampa needs to step up and use the cap room to bring in a offensive player that can make a difference. Tampa needs to look at brigning Javon Walker, Stallworth or Devery Henderson, they need to stop going after players like Bryant that are number 3 receivers, we need an offensive player that can take over a game, they need to stop settling for average players and put the offense in a position that can win the game instead of putting it all on the defense.
