There’s no question the Big East Conference’s football teams have struggled as a whole in non-conference play thus far this season.
Big East teams are just 1-6 against other BCS conference opponents, while also suffering losses to teams from the Mountain West, Western Athletic and Mid-American conferences.
USF coach Skip Holtz was asked twice this week, once during Monday’s Big East coaches teleconference and again after Wednesday’s practice, about the conference’s struggles as a whole.
The gist of Holtz’s responses was that he thinks the Big East is a competitive conference (what you would expect any coach in the league to say), things fold out differently than most people think every season, it’s a long season and that the key is for the Big East teams to play well in the middle and late in the year.
The Big East certainly has a chance for a big week, beginning tonight when Pittsburgh hosts Miami in a nationally-televised game on ESPN. Cincinnati (vs. Oklahoma), West Virginia (at LSU) and Rutgers (vs. North Carolina) also have big non-conference games Saturday.
A few wins by Big East teams could help repair some of the damage done to the conference’s reputation from the early-season struggles. There is also the chance, however, that the Big East could be the only BCS conference without an undefeated and/or ranked team by the close of the weekend.

Odds are good Pitt and WVU both loose but as Skip said it really matters at the end of the year. Whoever wins the BE conference will be ranked going into the bowl games and a BCS bowl win will put that team in the top 20 for the final poll. ACC is also having a horrible year but it is worse for them having 5 teams ranked at the beginning of season and now down to one. VTech is a huge disappointment and at least a BE team has not lost to a lower division school. FSU is overrated again (what a surprise). Miami will probably win the league with 2-3 losses. USF has a very good shot at winning the BE, also with a couple losses. Go Bulls!

Well….PITT was destroyed last night and they have a lot of concerns on the O-side of the ball.
WVU is the most consistent team so far this season and the most well-rounded. They have a shot against LSU but it is less than 50%
RU….besides the fact that I cannot stand them and Schiano will more than likely lose to a UNC squad that could be 2-0 if they would have had all of their missing players. The games they have lost have been close and were in a position to win.
UC….plays Oklahoma, nothing more needs to be said!
Adam….RU and WVU seem to be getting high profile games (UM & BYU), any news our sked for future?
Thanks.

Not looking real good for the BE right now. Big opportunity, though, for USF.

Ken and Atlanta Bull, I think most USF fans agree with you two, that the Big East seems ripe for the taking with all the early-season struggles by a lot of the teams. Guess we’ll see.
And Hector, I will check ASAP on your scheduling question.
