Hillsborough rising senior linebacker Rodney Williams, who was recently ranked No. 49 in the Orlando Sentinel’s list of the top 100 recruits in the state, has been offered a scholarship by Bethune-Cookman University, Terriers coach Earl Garcia said Wednesday.
For the 6-foot-1, 225-pound Williams, it’s his first official offer. He played last season for Spoto High, where he averaged 11.6 tackles per game with three sacks. Offensively, he rushed 37 times for 135 yards with one touchdown. He was later named to the Tribune’s All-Hillsborough County Defensive second-team.
Aside from the recognition he has received from the Sentinel’s list, Williams is regarded by several recruiting services as one of the top prospects in Florida for 2011.
The hard-hitting linebacker was Spoto’s top defensive player the last two seasons, leading the Spartans to their first playoff appearance in 2008 with 105 tackles, six sacks and six rushing touchdowns. Earlier this spring, Williams transferred to Hillsborough, where he is expected to be a starter on a Terriers defense hit hard by graduation.
