Best DE at LSU-UF game? He’ll be in the stands

When No. 4 LSU visits No. 11 Florida Saturday night in a key SEC battle in Gainesville, the most talented defensive end will be found … sitting in the stands.

University of South Florida DE George Selvie is expected to attend the game as a guest of UF defensive line coach Dan McCarney, who was Selvie’s position coach last season at USF.

Selvie and the Bulls are off this week.

“We need all the help we can get,” McCarney joked about having Selvie at the game in Gainesville. “He is going to give me a few snaps.”

Last year in McCarney’s only season with USF, Selvie earned the school’s first consensus All-American honors. Selvie was second in the nation with 14.5 sacks and had a national-best 31.5 tackles for loss, one shy of the NCAA record.

This season, Selvie has been slowed by a high ankle sprain. He has five tackles for loss, including two sacks. He did not play at N.C. State and has missed parts of the Florida International and Pittsburgh games.

USF coach Jim Leavitt admitted earlier this week that Selvie “shouldn’t have played” last week against Pittsburgh because of the injury.

Allen, I don’t know about McKenzie. Mike Lakeland, I don’t think George would go with the jorts - let’s hope not!

I hope that they don’t make him wear the official Gator garb - jorts.

Will McKenzie be going, too?  McCarney was his head coach.

John, I’m sure if it hurt his ankle to walk on it, he would stay off of it. And until USF can put him in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber 24/7, I don’t think it’s a big deal he’s going to a game, on his off week to show support for his position coach from last season. Also, who knows, USF could get some pub out of Selvie being at the game from the national TV folks.

I don’t understand why Selvie is attending the UF game. He should stay home and take care of his ankle.

Jay, Ben has always been the “most-trusted” by the coaches of USF’s running backs. When healthy, Ben will certainly be back out there. The coaches continually praise how strong of a blocker he is. I’m sure you’ll see more from a healthier Ben the second half of the season.

Brett,

Man, what the Gators would give to have #95 at DE.  It will be nice to get Selvie and company back when healthy.  Any chance of seeing more of Ben Williams on the field?  He has disappeared with that ankle problem.
