With the top grade-point averages in boys cross country and boys and girls swimming and diving, Berkeley Prep has a five-point lead over Miami Ransom Everglades in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Class 4A Academic Team Champions standings following fall sports.
The Buccaneers recorded a 3.860 GPA in boys cross country, 3.744 in boys swimming and 3.833 in girls swimming. Other GPAs in the top 10 were girls cross country 3.711 (10th); football 3.370 (second); girls golf 3.694 (seventh) and volleyball 3.672 (third).
Other area schools in the top 10 include Sunlake (seventh, Class 6A); Jesuit (fourth, Class 5A); Zephyrhills (eighth, Class 5A); Holy Names (fourth, Class 4A) and Tampa Prep (fourth, Class 3A).
Jesuit (boys bowling) and Holy Names (girls cross country) were the other local schools to finish first in an individual sport.
The FHSAA Academic Team Champion recognition program honors teamwork not only in competition, but in the classroom as well. The program recognizes teams in each of the Association’s 22 sanctioned sports and eight recognized sports, naming an Academic Team Champion in each classification.
Fall teams use the previous spring semester cumulative unweighted GPA. Winter and spring teams use the first semester cumulative unweighted GPA. Freshman grades are not included in GPA for fall sports since they do not have a previous high school cumulative GPA, unless the freshman received credit toward graduation in classes taken below the ninth grade and then only in those classes for which such credit was received.
