Plant senior right-handed pitcher David Bergin has left the team, Panthers coach Dennis Braun confirmed Monday.

Bergin was 6-2 with a 2.31 ERA. He struck out 35 and only walked 6 in 33 1/3 innings.

Plant opens in the Class 5A-District 10 tournament Tuesday. The Panthers, No. 1 seed, will face the winner of Monday’s Robinson-Blake game.

Dave is a great kid. He is one tough compeititor that always wants the ball. Hope he and his family are well.
Georgia Southern is getting a pit bull of a pitcher.
He played with my son this past Fall on Chet Lemon’s Juice.

baseball fan, i agree you shouldnt quit in the middle of the season, esp right b4 playoffs, and he will be a huge loss for plant, but you dont understand how much everyone on the team doesnt like braun, you dont see those things during game nights, he hasnt been liked since he got to plant, its a long list of internal problems with coaches and players not seeing eye to eye, on alot of things, i am surprised it took him so long to leave, and that he is the only one to leave

Dear Baseball Fan,

Don’t see how one thing has to do with another. There are always two sides to every story.
Ask any of his teammates what kind of young man Dave is. They are definitely disappointed with his decision but I’m sure they support him and wish him the best also.
Joe

Quitter is the bottom line here.  If Braun was so hated, Bergin’s family would have been successful in getting him fired last summer.  The players (not all starters or full time) along with parents came to Braun’s defense and exposed the Bergin family and David as the sour grapes whiners they were.  Let’s face it, everyone thinks their kid should play and some are blind due to love, but when you put yourself in the situation that you are against the team, you become a cancer.  Look’s like chemo was successful here.  I hope the team can now focus, move forward and accomplish what they are capable of.

Forget Braun.  What about his teamates?  Players don’t have to “like” their coach.  Play ball and let the coaches coach.  He quits going into districts.  Selfish.  Guess he won’t get the ball now since he quit.

Just another example of a spoiled kid and his parents not getting what they want so they quit and go home.  What a loser!  Being a starting hurler on a nationally ranked team isn’t good enough.  The coach actually had the audacity to raise his voice to the player about team play so he cries to mommy and daddy and they allow him to quit.  I’ve known David since he got to Plant and no one who knows him is surprised by this behavior.  Maybe he can go back to threatening to beat up girls again.

It seems like lots of folks in the Tampa Bay area like to see kids bashed - and most forget that they are just kids and they will make mistakes along the way.  I too agree you shouldn’t quit a team but there are too sides to every story as Joe C said and a lot of times the truth never comes out.  I hope everyone that writes a bad statement about a young man looks back at themselves and tries to remember how they were when they were as a teenager…

Addition by Subtraction.

Our team could’nt stand the baby when he was with us and now we can move on without the pouting selfish crying attitude.  Thanks for nothing, you PUNK!

To Ricky Mantle:

You are right!  There are two sides to this story!

On one side you have a team and coach trying to come together with the common goal of winning a state championship.

On the other side you have a spoiled little brat who wasn’t satisfied with being 6-2 on a nationally ranked team so he quits.

Shame on his parents for allowing it.

The first time he runs into any type of situation he doesn’t like in his adult life his parents have taught him to quit, cry, and lay blame elsewhere.

Great parenting!

Plant parents and players are quick to call David a loser and quiter.Funny how
they don’t mention all the racial slurs, humiliation and harassment he’s had to put up with all year just because he chose to play AAU this past summer. Coach Braun is the fist racist pig on that team for allowing to go on. You really aren’t as good as you think you are. There’s just a bunch of weak teams in your district this year.when you play real teams like Jesuit you loose. You will never win state this year. You can have all the wins in the world but I would never allow a son of mine to play with a bunch of spoiled, racist, punks.

Do you not think his reaction of quiting is reflective of coach Braun. Coach Braun after every loss has said the following we didn’t hit, we didn’t field and we didn’t pitch well. He has never given any credit to the other team, the team that won and maybe just simply played better, with this example to follow why are you supprised at his choice.

This is not about Coach Braun and a popularity contest-it does not matter if u like him or not- He is there to coach and he has raised the standard of the game at Plant- David may be a nice young man,but the lesson here is not to be a QUITTER and bite the bullet and play your game no matter what- Welcome to real world its not going to get easier, it just shows he is not a TEAM PLAYER, and HE let down his team for PERSONAL reasons. It does not show much character in him-

Braun is a beat up looking bum who coaches a baseball team with the bests players in the county and never makes nothing of it. He looks like a freakin petifile and he could use a few hygiene lessons. At a school like plant, it seems weird having such a bum coach like him. Aside sucking at life, he is a terrible baseball coach, Bring PUCKETT back! Coach braun can say whatever he wants but he will never be COACH WEINER! He will be gone after this year and probably have a DUI and be in jail after that but who cares anyway, he is about as usefull as a blind guy teaching someone how to drive! Looks like another district meltdown, SERGIO PITA also sucks BERGIN is better!

Well we all know who made the last comment. And for your information, Weiner may be a good coach, but everything he knows he learned from Ciao over at Jesuit. And how is Braun a bad coach? He’s coached for 24 years, internationally, collegiately, and professionally. I’m pretty sure that he is the best coach in Hillsborough county. No one knows the game like he does. And for asking players, why don’t you go in there and ask them what they think of him before and after he quit. I’m pretty sure it will be nothing but negative comments and I bet they are happy the cancer is gone.

Por (baseball is better) on April 23, 2008 (Suggest removal)

just let me say that in braun’s last 3 years as coach he has sent more of his players to compete at the next level than coach weiner has since he’s been at plant. A high school coach’s goal is to get his players ready to play in college. OH YEAH, how many scholarships did the football team get last year? 4 maybe? and football has 60 more players than baseball. Think braun might be a better coach than weiner

My son is proud to play for Coach Braun no matter how hard Braun is on him. My son knows baseball is a team effort. Everyone has their ups and downs. No one is perfect including the coaches. The team was not a better team with Coach Puckett so let’s not think about the past but strive for a better future. All the adversity my son has faced on the Plant’s baseball team does not make him angry but a stronger young man ready to face more challenges in the future. By attacking coach Braun shows how much ignorance is still out there! Bergin made a decision that will affect him and no one else.Good Luck Plant Baseball Team and I wish all of you the very best! Peace not War! Love not Hate!

Bottom line, Coach Braun accomplishes his goals of getting the most players playing baseball in college programs of any coach in the area.  Give up on all this “winning” stuff and look at the real mission.  Who the crap cares about winning district!!!!  I do care about my son getting the best prep to go and compete for a college spot and Braun is the one!!! Braun isn’t going anywhere as a result of a few disgruntled parents.  Do the parents agree with everything he does, of course not. Still, he has plenty of support from the baseball parents.

As for David Bergin, he has, along with his mommy and grandmommy, made his own bed and will have to live with it forever.  He QUIT the team just when the games were going to get tough.  I know what that says to me, how can anyone read it differently??? Trust me, the team will survive. As for David’s comment upon arrival at the Plant-Robinson game last night [allegedly]...“I came to see Braun blow it again”...sorry, David that you didn’t get your wish. At least Womack [catcher for Plant] won’t have to put up with your sweaty palms anymore when the game gets tight!!! And remember, real men step up and fight their own battles.  Are you taking your mommy and grandmommy up to Georgia Southern with you???

Bottom line…... David Bergin is a quiter.  He better thank his lucky stars Coach Dennis Braun was kind enough, took the interest and time to get him a scholarship at Georgia Southern. What David going to do when he has to run at Georgia Southern? Quit again, because he is not a team player just a big baby! Stop bashing Coach Braun who makes the effort to place his players at the next level and focus on the real issue, David Bergin the individual who is not a team player!!
