Hubert “Beefy” Wright, the first baseball coach in USF history, passed away Aug. 13 in High Point, N.C., at age 82.
Wright coached the Bulls from 1966-74, posting a 131-127-2 record in his nine seasons. His best year was a 23-16 mark in 1973.
According to his obituary, Wright was a graduate of Guilford College and earned a master’s degree from North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He began coaching at the high school level in North Carolina before moving to Florida.
At USF, Wright also taught physical education and teacher preparation classes.
Wright and his wife, Ruby, were married 62 years and had four children. His survivors also include six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
