Andre Simpson’s heard all the jokes, including the one about his Leto (0-7) team facing Strawberry Crest (0-6) for the “Game of the Weak.’’
Thing is, this game, as well as this season, is no laughing matter to Simpson and his Falcons teammates. They haven’t won a game yet, but tonight’s contest provides Leto with its best opportunity to get off the losing schneid.
“Of course it hurts every game we don’t win, but we just try not to think about it and go into the next game with more pride and belief we can get better,’’ Simpson said. “We know about the jokes, but we’re not worried about it right now. They don’t see the pride we’re building and how hard we’re working.’’
The numbers don’t necessarily reflect that hard work for either team. Leto’s losses have been by an average of 47 points. Strawberry Crest has been outscored by an average of 48 points. Neither team has been helped by having to play in the district of death, along with state championship programs Armwood and Jefferson.
But despite the rough road, tonight, one team will emerge with a long-eluding victory. A win for Leto would be its first on the field (they had a forfeit win vs. King last year) since they defeated Middleton in overtime 16-13 on Nov. 6. 2009. Strawberry Crest’s last victory was a 25-22 win against Steinbrenner on Oct. 22 last season.
