TAMPA – There’s talk in Buffalo this morning that new Bills coach Chan Gailey may be interested in bringing in Jim Bates as his defensive coordinator.
Bates, who was relieved of his duties as the Bucs defensive coordinator after just 10 games last season, has a long history with Gailey.
Bates served as an assistant head coach/defensive line coach to Gailey during Gailey’s two-year term as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys in 1998 and 1999.
Bates and Gailey also spent two years opposing each other as the respective defensive and offensive coordinators for the Miami Dolphins from 2000-2001.
Bates came to the Bucs after spending a year out of football, but his two-gap system didn’t mesh well with the Bucs personnel.
Bates said Friday morning he has not spoken to Gailey, but is free to move on from the Bucs should he desire.
“We’ve settled things and we’re free to go our separate ways,’’ said Bates, who has maintained his home in Lutz.
