Armwood added former Slippery Rock University pitcher Dave Sansom as its new baseball coach, Armwood athletic director Don Hill announced Tuesday.
Sansom, who was at The Rock from 2000-03, pitched in two NCAA Division II World Series tournaments (2000 and 2003) during that time. His final two seasons he went 10-0, striking out 59 batters.
Sansom served as an Armwood girls basketball assistant last season and replaces Mike Wrenn, who resigned in July to join the Hillsborough Community College staff as a pitching coach. In five seasons under Wrenn, the Hawks went 85-45 and had two consecutive Class 5A state tournament appearances, including playing for the state title in 2010.
“David is highly qualified and highly motivated,” Hill said. “We interviewed a lot of people for what we had here at the school and he seemed to be the best fit.”
Sansom is now the second Armwood head coach with Slippery Rock University ties. Football coach Sean Callahan is also an alumnus of the western Pennsylvania school.
