ARLINGTON, Tx. As expected, the Rays placed shortstop Jason Bartlett on the 15-day disabled list Thursday night because of a strained right hamstring
Catcher Kelly Shoppach (right knee surgery), who was expected to rejoin the team next week after spending this week on a minor league rehab assignment with the Rays Triple A Durham team, cut short that assignment and will rejoin the team Friday before the start of the three-game series with the Rangers.
Replacing Bartlett with Shoppach delays the decision the Rays will have to make on what to do with rookie catcher John Jaso and incumbent Dioner Navarro.
Jaso has been one of the more productive bats in the lineup since his April 13 promotion from Durham to replace Shoppach. He is hitting .304 with two home runs and 19 RBIs.
Navarro, who hit .136 in April, has hit .303 during the past 11 games to raise his average to .204.
Bartlett is scheduled to come off the disabled list June 13, which gives the Rays a week to decide on what to do with the crowd behind the plate.
Bartlett strained his right hamstring Saturday while trying to field a ground ball against the White Sox and missed the next four games.
Bartlett said Monday he would be able to rejoin the team Friday, but the soreness persisted and prevented him from fielding ground balls.
His inability to play played a role during the Rays games against the Blue Jays on Monday and Tuesday. Before Wednesday’s game, Rays manager Joe Maddon said he didn’t want to face the Rangers this weekend with a short bench.
Maddon also said the team would be more interested in adding some offense should Bartlett head to the disabled list since the Rays have Reid Brignac and Sean Rodriguez to fill in at shortstop.
Dan Johnson, who is crushing Triple A pitching with the Bulls, seemed the likely candidate.
Having three catchers on the roster means Maddon can use Jaso as the designated hitter or a pinch hitter.
