ST. PETERSBURG Rays reliever Grant Balfour is headed to the disabled list with an intercostal strain.
This could be a big loss for the Rays since injuries near the rib cage generally take a long time to heal.
That will open a spot in the bullpen for Chad Qualls, the right-hander they obtained this morning from the Diamondbacks for a player to be named later.
Given what Balfour and Qualls have each done this season, this isn’t a swap that appears to favor the Rays.
Qualls is 1-4 this season with an 8.29 ERA in 38 innings over 43 appearances. Right-handers are batting .348 against him. Lefties are batting .380.
It’s possible Balfour’s injury will force the Rays to bring up Jeremy Hellickson and add him to the bullpen.
The non-waiver trade deadline is looming at 4 p.m. It will be interesting to see if the Rays swing any more moves.
