Aztex’s Johnson named D-II Player of the Month

Austin Aztex forward Eddie Johnson has been named the USSF Division II Player of the Month for May after his five goals and two assists led the Aztex to the top of the league standings.

Austin went 4-0-2 in the month of May mainly in part thanks to Johnson’s scoring prowess. He currently sits second in the league in goals and points, trailing only Portland’s Ryan Pore. He has also combined well with fellow forward Jamie Watson as the Aztex have average over two goals a game for the season.

MY BALLOT: Here is the ballot I submitted as one of the 12 voters for the monthly award.

1. Eddie Johnson, Austin Aztex – As previously noted, Johnson was brilliant throughout May, especially notching three goals in two games against the Rowdies.

2. Aaron Wheeler, FC Tampa Bay Rowdies – However, it was a tough decision for me to take Johnson over Wheeler, who was a key figure in the Rowdies seven-game undefeated run through the month. Wheeler had four goals and an assist in May as the focal point for the Rowdies attack, an impressive feat for the 22-year-old.

3. Nelson Akwari, Vancouver Whitecaps – The Whitecaps conceded only two goals in four games in May, and Akwari was crucial to that playing every minute of every game. Vancouver has still yet to concede a goal at home this season.
