Austin Aztex’s forward Maxwell Griffin has been named the USSF Division II Player of the Month of June, becoming the second straight Aztex’s player to earn the honor after teammate Eddie Johnson was named Player of the Month for May.
Griffin scored four goals, including a hat trick in a 3-1 victory against Miami, the first in Austin’s franchise history. He also added an assist, and now sits in the top five of the four major offensive categories in the league with 13 points, five goals, three assists, and 30 shots.
Austin went 3-1-1 in June and leads the Rochester Rhinos by six points at the top of the USL Conference.
MY BALLOT: Here’s the ballot I submitted for this month’s award.
1. Jay Nolly, Vancouver: Nolly had an outstanding month as the Whitecaps went undefeated (3-0-3), recording a 0.67 goals against average while recording a pair of shutouts.
2. Maxwell Griffin, Austin: Griffin had a great game against Miami, and helped pick up the slack as Eddie Johnson scored only twice and Jamie Watson was held off the score sheet in June.
3. Andres Arango, Minnesota: Was at the center of a defense that recorded three shutouts in June and also scored his first goal of the season as the Stars went 3-1-1.
