With training camp winding down, we’ll try to get Roy Cummings to take on another session of addressing your questions around lunchtime today (tomorrow will be a getaway day, for sure, with few if any substantive developments). Who’s stood out the most? Who’s the surprise of camp? What injuries are the most troubling?
Let us know what’s on your mind.

As a Big Buc Fan, I hope McCown kicks butt on Sunday(and his passport says he is 16 years of age). I hope Griese does too. That would be the best scenario for everybody. Just keep an eye on Josh Johnson. I think he is on his way to complete Stud-dom. The Saints lost Hollis Thomas for 2 months. I bet they lose more against the Texans this weekend. I also hear Reggie Bush is a little banged up. One man’s loss is another man’s gain.

I base my opinion of McCown on his performance, not his interviews. Other than dumb errors here and there, he looks pretty good. He had the most yards out of the bunch, even against the better D. I know he must get past the errors. He was sacked once with no picks. That’s not bad considering he played 1st. I don’t know what you’re problem with him is Skylar, but I’ve seen enough of Griese to know I’d rather take my chances with McCown. He at least has potential while Griese is a career back-up. This only matters if Garcia gets hurt anyway, so let’s move on.

Skylar, I don’t think I’m too confused here. McCown played 2nd so he faced a better D than Griese. Griese throws a lot of picks while McCown still makes some dumb errors. I’d rather our QB take a sack than throw a pick, which is Griese’s expertise. Just because Gruden likes older QBs doesn’t mean he’ll always put them higher on the depth chart.
You are talking about Brooks from last year. I’m asking whether he has slowed down at all this year. If you read my questions/comments better, I think you would see that it’s obvious I watched the game, but failed to pay any attention to whether Brooks played or how well, if he did. When starters are only in briefly, it’s hard to know. That’s why I asked someone who spent much time at camp.

Brandon, how can you even mention McCown in the same breath as Favre or Bradshaw? Are you saying those 2 HOF QB’s are Stupid. I think Bradshaw plays that role too often, but he’s no dummy. He makes more money in 1 day than you make all year. I think most things Farve said during his saga were pretty savy. He wanted to play for the Pack & they said NO. Who’s the dummy there? I have seen McCown every time he’s played in a Bucs’ uniform and heard him speak. He’s no Stud. He’s a good ole country boy type & will never be a #1 QB anywhere for more than a game or 2 if someone gets hurt. Cold hard facts. Sorry, my opinion. I’ll be at the game Sunday while you armchair it in VA. Go Bucs! Go Josh!

Griese - 42-36 as a starter. McClown - not so much. I think McClown has the physical attributes necessary, but he hasn’t grasped the system in 3 years now and makes boneheaded plays that lead to points for the other team too often. And even though it was preseason, Griese clearly had a handle on the offense while McClown clearly continues to struggle. Apparently, you would like to hold his jock as you are not seeing things as they are but as you wish they were. You’ll be WRONG come opening day and I imagine you’ll act like you never said these silly things. And how can an opinion be wrong anyway? You need to lighten up Brandon. This is a forum of opinions.

BigBucFan,
You sound like you know what you’re talking about, unfortunately the reality is that you don’t.
You think giving a good sideline interview makes a good QB? Quick! Somebody let Brett Favre and Terry Bradshaw know so we can go back and delete all of their records and in the meantime we need to get Michael Savage on the field ASAP, he’s witty and has great comebacks, he’ll be a great QB.
Your misguided opinion is wrong, especially considering it was preseason. Despite your assessment, McCown remains as the #2 and has all the physical tools to be a stud, only needing experience to see if he has reached his so-called pinnacle of promise.

Ref813; you are truly confused. McCown may be holding Griese’s jock strap come gametime, but he won’t be ahead of him on the depth chart. Griese understands the WCO and McCown still looks confused after 3 years here. Did you even watch the last game?
Brooks had the 7th most tackles for OLB in the league last year and that was after being spelled by June on 3rd downs - he’s the leader of our defense and still one of the best in the game.
Simms looks sharper than over the past 2 years, but he is better suited for a play/action/pass offense. We should try to unload him to the Chiefs or Cardinals.

Does Brooks look at all like he’s lost a step? I forgot to focus on him more during the game. Also, what happened with Wilson? The guy played for a championship team, but looked like a rookie out there some of the time. I know he’s changing positions, but he may only be good at S. Is there any chance that the Bucs will keep Garcia for another year, keep Simms, and dump Griese? I guess that’s several questions in one, but I imagine you can handle it.
McCown may sound dumb, but he looks better than Griese. I’d rather keep him. A mental error resulting in a sack is nothing compared to one resulting in an interception.

Yes, lets base our judgement off of one preseason game, no, one sideline interview.

I have been a fan of McCown until recently. He did some good things last season, but also had some horrible mistakes. When I listened to his interview during the game, he could hardly put a sentence together. He really sounded (forgive me) stupid. He almost sounded like BUSH trying to answer the reporters question. I had to ask “ Is this the guy we want as a backup”. A QB must have brains and be able to think quickly on his feet. McCown can’t do that & his tape shows it. Garcia always has a quick comeback or smart remark to say. He thinks quick on his feet, processes information rapidly. Simms does this too. He is a smart guy. McCown is like Doby Gillis. He is goofy and he needs to go with Gradkowsky. Nice guy, last place. Keep Simms.

BigBucFan...or Ray Cummings...why were McCown’s mechanics so awful in the Fins game...wobbly passes etc....he had two very good games last season...Chris Simms should play the next game to get a good look at both!

What does Roy know that I don’t?

I say keep Simms and get rid of Griese. Simms is still young enough and got the talent to be the starter when Garcia is done.

What have coaches said so far about Talib’s devlopment so far and will he challenge Buchanon for a starting spot anytime this year?

How is Ben Troupe doing in Camp. Will he be playing in any of the preseason Games? I read he had a concussion.

In the Backup QB race, it looks as if Griese is entrenched, Johnson almost has to be kept based on his potential. Leaving Simms & McCown. Who stays & who goes? Simms looked better against the Dolphins than McCown did to me. Mc Cown seems to have peaked without reaching the pinacle of starting QB ability. Simms is rusty, but seems to have a much greater upside at this point. Has Simms improved this week. Would it be a mistake to let Simms go? McCown could never hurt us on another team, but Simms just might. Your thoughts???

Seems like the offense looks deeper this year but not really a unit. Garcia and Galloway have barely played, I’m optimistic we are going to be better especially at WR and the line...have you seen anything compared to other training Camps that makes you think the offense is finally coming together?

When do you see the Bucs releasing Simms? I have heard conflicting reports as to how well he’s looked in camp, in the limited time he’s gotten reps. He looked capable in the Dolphins game, but was it enough to make other teams believe he’s worth a shot somewhere? Thanks!

McCown played 1st, I meant. We’ll see how Griese plays as the No. 1 this week.
