Alex Cobb was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital with discomfort in his right hand after leaving Saturday’s game in the fifth inning.

Manager Joe Maddon said he didn’t know Alex Cobb had discomfort in his right hand until after Cobb was removed in the fifth inning with one-out and the bases-loaded in what became an 8-0 loss to the visiting A’s.

Cobb was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital for tests.

The Rays did not provide anymore details after the game.

But Cobb’s discomfort could have been the reason why he matched his shortest outing of the season, allowed a career-high five runs and walked four of the last eight batters he faced.

More information will be available this morning.

Here are some notes from a bad night at the Trop for the local nine:

The A’s stole seven bases, the most ever against a Rays team. Coco Crisp fell one steal shy of trying the A’s record when he swiped four, including second and third during the fifth inning.

The A’s entered the game successful in only 68.5 of their steal attempts, the third lowest percentage in the American League.

Rays catcher Robinson Chirinos, absolved of all by one of the steals because the pitchers did a poor job of holding runners on, has thrown out just two of 25 base stealers this season.

On the positive side, Chirinos was 2-for-3 to raise his average to .300. He has reached base in nine of his last 13 plate appearances.

After going 3-0 in his first seven starts, Cobb has now lost two straight.

It was the 11th time the Rays were shutout this season, the seventh time at home. Those are the most shutouts since they were blanked 12 times in 2004.

The 1998 club set the team record by getting shutout 17 times.

The A’s have won the season series from the Rays for only the second time in the last five seasons.

The A’s are averaging 5.76 runs since the All-Star Break, the third-highest total in the majors during that stretch. They averaged the third-lowest runs (3.42) in the majors over the first half of the season.

The A’s are averaging 7.6 runs in their six games against the Rays.
