There is a good chance that Evgeny Artyukhin will at least receive a phone call from the league office, if he hasn’t already, regarding his knee-on-knee hit with Florida’s Ville Peltonen. It appeared that Arthukhin stuck out his knee as the two collided at the end of the second period. Peltonen lay on the ice for several minutes and had to be helped off the ice. The Panthers scored the eventual game winner on the penalty (which was called tripping, not kneeing).
The team confirmed they have been contacted by the league, while NHL Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy said on Sunday that every game is reviewed and the league acts accordingly. And unless there is a hearing and subsequent punishment, the league does not comment on such matters.
Were Artyukhin to receive some sort of suspension - and he would be considered a repeat offender for his suspension in 2005-06 for his helmet swing incident against the Senators - it would be handed down before Monday’s game.
Also, Matt Smaby showed back up on the injury report on Sunday with a lower body injury. Smaby was activated off injured reserve before Saturday’s game after missing the previous three. The team did not skate on Sunday, only holding a team meeting and short workout, so it was hard to guage how banged up Smaby might be, although he looked like he had a slight limp walking around.
Meanwhile, Marek Malik has been walking around the locker room with a boot on his right foot, stemming from an injury suffered during Thursday’s game against Philadelphia. Malik said he twisted his ankle some what, and though he finished the game on Thursday and practiced on Friday, he left the ice early and has had the boot on ever since. The team continues to list him as being day-to-day with a lower body injury.
And one more injury note, in talking with Steve Eminger last night after the game, he seemed to be uncomfortable with some sort of issue around his right groin area, which he kept pushing down as I spoke to him briefly. Now, he’s not being listed on the injury report and his previous issue was an upper-body situation, it’s something to keep an eye on.
The defense is so banged up right now, perhaps the All-Star break can’t come soon enough. Not sure if Smaby’s situation will force the team to dip into the minors once again and perhaps bring up Vladimir Mihalik once again.

Arty no more intentionally laid that hit no more than Smitty intentionally threw his stick in the shootout vs. the Avs.
That is why I have NO faith in the ‘officials’ to get this one right.

Also, see hit on Doughty, Drew.

I can’t remember the details of the hit exactly, but I recall Arty had his left skate bumped from under him just before his collision with Peltonen, and I saw nothing dirty in it. It appeared as if Arty extended his leg to balance himself after being grazed, and he just happened to collide with Ville. I could be wrong though, but I disagree with Florida’s coach: I don’t think he’d risk his own knee to take out someone else’s.

If this ownership team deals Lecavalier, I refuse to buy my 3 season tix again next year.

If Arty gets suspended, than I think Ovechkin needs to be suspended for trying to kill Jaime Heward whether that play was dirty or not(I still say it was dirty). All it is, is that Arty is a big guy, who hits someone, not meaning for the guy to get hurt, and everyone slams him because of it. It’s bulls**t. Plus…I was at the game, yea I was in the terrace level, but I saw it. It looked like to me they collided into each other, and Arty laid on the ice for about a minute or two himself before going to the locker room.

If that article is correct, then Len Barrie is a moron of truly epic proportions. I will never feel comfortable with this team as long as he has any power at all within the organization, and I hope Koules puts that Neanderthal in his place.

Callie, I agree with totally. There was more damage done to Heward and it was closer to intentional. Don’t forget that many of us speculated that if it had been Arty, he would be suspended.
There really is a double standard in the league in favor of the big stars.

Gosh it sounds like it was a pretty boring game. Thank heaven Sunshine Network realized it was a waste of my time (in Gainesville) and switched me to the Mississippi State basketball game after the first period. I am sure glad someone is looking out for me….Oh and I have Ice time, too, but they don’t let us see any Tampa games as they figure we can just drive the 150 miles for each game…

The one Common Denominator? Referee Tim Teel (#20), the same guy who claimed Smitty “threw” his stick to save a penalty shootout! I was at both games and was amazed by his interpretation. Draw your own conclusions folks.
