Armwood lost a key piece to its offense during Friday night’s 42-0 rout of Middleton.
Senior receiver A.J. King, the Hawks’ leading returning receiver from 2009 and a Division I prospect, suffered a right knee injury during a fourth-quarter punt return and could miss a month or longer, according to Armwood coach Sean Callahan.
Callahan said the initial diagnosis was a Grade II sprain, adding trainers did not believe there was any ligament damage. He said King, who will be re-evaluated at some point, likely will be sidelined 4-6 weeks.
King had 45 receptions for 728 yards and seven touchdowns in 2009. He also was solid in the return game, scoring an additional three times on punt returns. He has scholarship offers from Mississippi, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Purdue, West Virginia and Florida International.
He had a solid game Friday before being injured, catching four passes for 37 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
“Obviously I’m very saddened by A.J. King’s (injury),” Callahan said. “He can play in a brace, so we’ll see how it goes. He’s in great shape, so maybe he’ll come back quicker.”
