Armwood senior receiver Richard Jules has verbally committed to Gardner-Webb, Hawks coach Sean Callahan said Wednesday.

Jules was Armwood’s second-leading pass catcher this season. He finished with 19 receptions for 329 yards and four touchdowns in helping the Hawks reach the Class 4A state semifinals. Jules also caught 19 passes as a junior (for 237 yards and three scores), which led the team.

“One reason I liked them was because they run the spread like we do at Armwood,” said Jules, who made an official visit to the campus in Boiling Springs, N.C., a few weeks ago. “I got along with all the players really good. They treated me like family and it was a good atmosphere. It’s a Christian university, so I like that.”

Gardner-Webb is a Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) program that competes in the Big South Conference. Jules also had interest from a few other FCS programs - Liberty, Towson, Stony Brook and Southern Illinois - though Gardner-Webb was the only one to extend an offer.

Jules is the second Armwood senior who has given a verbal committment. Running back/defensive back Sherman Jessie previously committed to Butler (Kan.) Community College.
