Armwood senior runing back and University of Florida commitment Matt Jones underwent successful surgery on his right knee Thursday, Hawks coach Sean Callahan said Thursday.

Callahan said the surgery was performed to repair a “minor” tear of tjhe meniscus in Jones knee, an injury he sustained last month at a football camp at the University of Central Florida. Callahan expects Jones to be out the standard 4-6 weeks, which means he will miss Armwood’s season-opening game on ESPN against host Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Both schools are among the nation’s top-ranked prep football teams in several polls.

According to Callahan, there was no ther damage other than the meniscus tear. The only surprise was the surgery was not performed by Dr. Seth Gasser. He was originally scheduled to be Jones’ surgeon but Callahan said insurance issues were going to result in a delay until next week if Gasser was going to operate on the knee. Instead, Callahan said the surgery was done by another noted local orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Stuart Goldsmith of Brandon.
