Armwood’s Jones running again

Just three weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, Armwood senior running back Matt Jones was able to do some light running at Thursday’s practice.

Jones, who has made a verbal commitment to the University of Florida, jogged on the knee and even did a few controlled runs up the Hawks’ stadium at Lyle Flagg Field. He was under the supervision of Hawks trainer Denise Andresky, who said she is pleased with Jones’ progress.

Jones is one of three Hawks players who have suffered a knee injury in the past two months, the most recent being quarterback Darryl Richardson, who ruptured a bursa sac in his right knee during the first quarter of Friday’s game against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. Center Cameron Dees suffered a meniscus tear in his knee about the same time as Jones, but was able to have his surgery performed sooner. He was able to start against Gorman.

Before he can think about suiting up again, Jones will have to be able to show Andresky and Hawks coach Sean Callahan he can make cuts and abrupt changes in direction while running. But Thursday’s workout was encouraging progress that brought a smile to Jones’ face as he sat in the team treatment room after the workout. The Hawks have an open week next Friday before returning to action Sept. 16 against Tampa Bay Tech.
