A little more than a month after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee to repair a slight tear in his meniscus, Armwood running back and University of Florida commitment Matt Jones is not only running, he’s also cutting, stopping and even taking a fall or two.
With trainer Denise Andresky watching over him at practice Tuesday, Jones was cutting left and right on the knee. And then, in the middle of the Hawks’ practice, Jones decided to run out on to the field and do what he called a big “doughnut” run.
Jones said if he had to, he could probably play this Friday against Tampa Bay Tech. But Hawks coach Sean Callahan said that’s not going to happen for at least another week. So with Jones still out and senior Wade Edwards recovering from a thigh bruise, you could see a pair of freshmen in Armwood’s backfield at some point Friday, Calen Holloway and Kaylaun Edwards.
Caylan is the nephew of former Plant City running back Sir Chauncey Holloway, who transferred to Armwood his senior year was was ruled ineligible to play. He’s currently playing for Liberty University.
Meanwhile, Hawks junior quarterback Darry Richardson has made what Callahan calls his best progress since rupturing a bursa sack in his right knee in Arnwood’s season opener against host Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. He won’t be available for the game against his former teammates at TBT but the brace is off the knee and the swelling and reduced considerably. In his place once again will be junior Alvin Bailey, who tossed two TD passes to wide out Javonte Sneed in Armwood’s game romp over Brandon two weeks ago.
Alvin, by the way, is the younger brother of former Hawks star Kalvin Bailey. And Alvin’s little brother is a sophomore on the team, receiver Talvin Bailey.
