With the kind of season he is having, it’s hard to believe Armwood junior wide receiver/defensive back/kick returner and occasional quarterback Alvin Bailey just received his first Division I scholarship offer. But considering it comes from a school known for its academics and “doing its homework,” it’s not surprising the pitch was made by prestigious Vanderbilt University.
The 6-foot, 170-pound Bailey received the offer last Friday, the same day the Commodores made an offer to another standout student-athlete, Hillsborough defensive end Jordan Sherit. Bailey, the younger brother of former Armwood star Calvin Bailey, has interest from other schools, including Florida, Alabama and Wake Forest, but Vandy is the first to make him an official offer.
Bailey, aka “Mayhem” for all the problems he poses for opposing defenses, is having arguably the best season of any player in Hillsborough County. Playing for the nationally-ranked and undefeated Hawks (10-0), Bailey has filled in at quarterback when Darryl Richardson was hurt in the season opener, has played wide out, slot back, the wildcat spot, defensive back and returned punts and kickoffs. He has thrown for 5 touchdowns and 414 yards, rushed 42 times for 422 yards and 2 TDs and has 21 receptions for 363 yards and 2 more TDs.
Vandy, which signed Armwood quarterback Josh Grady last February and has also made an offer to Hawks offensive lineman Kevin McCoy, is first in line for Bailey right now. But before the season is over, expect many other to be joing that queue.
