This is definitely a drill you don’t see at cross country practice: a bunch of young men shouting, screaming and cheering as two of their teammates face off in a testosterone-filled, one-on-one confrontation of brute strength.
At Armwood, it’s called the “Thud” drill and Thursday, the Hawks’ offense and defense were going at it. Players from each unit squared off with one simple goal: overpower the other guy.
The highlight of the drill was when coach Sean Callahan called for linebacker Eric Striker and offensive lineman Cody Waldrop to square off. Callahan called it “Oklahoma vs. South Carolina,” the schools Striker and Waldrop have made verbal commitments to, respectively.
