Following its 20-17 season-opening victory over host Las Vegas Bishop Gorman on Friday, the Armwood football team has risen to No. 1 in the national MaxPreps Freeman rankings.
The Freeman rankings utilizes a computer program to determine team rank. It does not poll coaches, the media or fans. Essentially, the system uses a large number of game results stored in a database. Typically, the more a team wins the higher the ranking but the computer model also takes into account quality wins against other ranked opponents and strength of schedule.
Entering the Gorman game, Armwood was No. 8 in the Freeman rankings and Gorman was No. 11, while Don Bosco Prep of New Jersey was on top of the list. Don Bosco, however, doesn’t open its season until Sept. 10, when it takes on No. 15 Mission Viejo at home. The following week, Don Bosco plays Manatee in Bradenton.
In the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 poll, which compiles prep sports writers’ votes, Armwood remains No. 2 behind idle Don Bosco.
