Armwood grad set for first collegiate start

Former Armwood football standout Mywan Jackson, now a defensive back at the University of North Carolina, will make his first collegiate start Saturday when the Tar Heels play against LSU in nationally-televised game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.

Jackson’s move to the starting lineup is the result of 12 North Carolina players being ruled ineligible for the game. Among the 12 were six defensive starters, including both starting cornerbacks.

Jackson, a sophomore, saw limited action during his first season in Chapel Hill. He appeared in six games, playing mostly on special teams. However, he’d worked his way into the No. 2 spot on the depth chart at cornerback and was expected to see an increased role in 2010.

Jackson was a standout quarterback at Armwood, and led the Hawks to the Class 4A state semifinals as a junior in 2007. He was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first-team pick following his senior season, when he accounted for 2,311 yards of total offense and 33 touchdowns.

“Armwood football is proud of where Mywan is at, and we are proud he is representing Armwood and Hillsborough County on a national level,” Hawks offensive coordinator Evan Davis said.

North Carolina is ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press Top 25 preseason poll; LSU is No. 21. The game can be seen on ABC. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.
