Armwood Athletic director Don Hill announced one of the largest hirings of coaches since the school opened in 1984, with new coaches named Tuesday for baseball, wrestling, cheerleading, boys and girls cross country, girls soccer, girls swimming and boys and girls golf.
“It was a pretty unusual circumstance to have this many coaching vacancies but we’re just happy we were able to find quality coaches to replace them,” Hill said. “I look forward to working with them and I’m sure our student-athletes do, too.”
Taking over the Hawks baseball team is David Sansom, who, like Armwood football coach Sean Callhan, is a graduate of Slippery Rock University. Sansom pitched in two Division II College World Series.
Also named to the school’s coaching staff were Frank Traina (girls swimming), Pete Mirones (boys and girls cross country), who is a former distance running coach at Tampa Catholic and Gaither, Virginia Wright (boys and girls golf), Stephany Smith (cheerleading), an Armwood alumnus who was a standout golfer there, C.J. Gittens (wrestling) and Samantha Bedford (girls soccer).
