Some of the top boys basketball players from Hillsborough and Pasco county will head to Orlando this weekend to compete in the AAU Boys Basketball National Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
Two AAU clubs—Florida Elite and Brandon Bolts—have mainly local players. Plant guard Sheldon Cooley (photo), Sickles guard Jordan Davis, Berkeley Prep guard Austin Suarez and Ridgewood forward Lukas Poderis play for Elite while Bloomingdale forwards Callum Townsend (injured) and Joe Raga, along with Durant guard A.J. Garden, Tampa Prep guard Jake Haslam and Berkeley guard Johnathan Gray, play with the Bolts. King forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick plays with Team Stat, which also qualified for the championships.
“Orlando will be the last opportunity to be able to play in front of hundreds of college coaches,” said Plant basketball coach Mike Phillips, who is an assistant for Elite. “All of the big name coaches are there.”
Elite won the 17U Florida state title last month in Clearwater.
Both club’s 17U teams are competing in the juniors 17U Division I pool starting Sunday.
