Brian Shouse declined the Rays offer of arbitration, meaning the 41-year-old lefty will try to land a job with another team and the Rays will receive a compensation sandwich pick (between the first and second rounds) of the June draft.
Add the two picks the Rays received as compensation when they failed to sign their first two picks of last year’s draft and the compensation sandwich pick they received when catcher Gregg Zaun signed with the Brewers, and the Rays will draft six times before the start of the third round.
Rays VP of baseball Andrew Friedman said they have six of the first 79 picks.
Not a bad haul for a team that considers its farm system the lifeblood of the organization.
Within a matter of minutes (and the baseball draft moves that fast) the Rays have a chance to add two or even three years’ worth of high-end prospects to their system.
