Manager Joe Maddon said Matt Garza could easily be the Rays Opening Day starter if not for James Shields.
Kind of hard to argue against that.
Garza had another impressive outing today, throwing five innings against the visiting Marlins. He allowed three hits, two runs, walked a pair and struck out four.
In 10 innings over three outings, Garza has struck out 10, walked three and allowed three runs.
Here’s an interesting note: B.J. Upton has two home runs today, his first two of the spring. Both were to right field. The first reached landed on the board walk in right-center and bounced off the Rays offices. The other landed in the Rays bullpen in right.
That’s two opposite field home runs in three at-bats for the center. That’s as many opposite field home runs Upton hit all last year.
