Another breakdown from Badger 7-on-7

FlaVarsity.com editor Michael Langston was at the recent Badger Sports 7-on-7 tournament at USF, which several Hillsborough County football players participated, and he provided a breakdown of the top offensive performers of the event.

While no local player made Langston’s overall Top Five list, several were mentioned.

Here is the breakdown Langston provided for his site, which is part of the Rivals.com network. It is premium content for the site (meaning you need a subscription to view it in its entirety), but Langston was kind enough to allow us to post the portions about the local athletes for our readers.

QB Phillip Ely (Plant)
The beat goes on for Plant head coach Robert Weiner. Weiner had a big part in the development of former standouts Robert Marve (Purdue) and more recently Aaron Murray (Georgia). Ely should follow that same mold again and showed off the best overall technique as a passer all weekend. Footwork, release point, and strong zip on the football was exceptional both Saturday and Sunday despite dealing with a sore back. Ely split time with Cody Phillips on the Doom Squad. Although it’s still early, we learned that Harvard was one of the more recent early offers. replacement for departing senior Drew Davis.

QB Quentin Williams (Jefferson)
Now this is the kid that might have been a surprise to some at the event leading Team Tampa to a very surprising but solid opening day with a 3-1 record before being eliminated in the quarterfinals on Sunday. However, on the opening day, Williams was extremely sharp in four games throwing for 11 touchdowns, showcasing good touch and arguably one of the stronger arms. Last year, Williams 3,377 yards, and 34 touchdowns for the Dragons breaking former Jefferson star Stephen Garcia’s single season record for touchdowns in a season.

RB Matt Jones (Armwood)
At 6-foot-2, 200 pounds Matt Jones is not your normal power back. He has a strong addition of speed and quickness to go along with that upper body strength. Jones is still learning the position, but his feel for the game, reading where the openings are at and cutback ability is way ahead of the curve. Obviously at 7-on-7 events, you don’t always get to appreciate his skills, but throughout the weekend Jones had some huge flashes of game breaking ability out in open space with quick feet and explosive speed in the open field.

RB J.J. Hubbard (Robinson)
Hubbard was another surprise for the 7-on-7 event that came out of nowhere. In the opening day of competition, Hubbard torched defenses for six touchdowns, powering Team Tampa to a very balanced attack and finishing 3-1 on Saturday. He had the best top end speed out of any back we saw this weekend and very shifty in one-on-one situations.

WR Andre Davis (Jefferson)
Size, speed, quickness…you name it, Davis showed it this weekend at the Badgers event. His strongest attribute however is his hands. He caught anything in the general area and made some dynamic grabs throughout the weekend. His route running has improved a significant amount from last year and Davis has even added a little more muscle to make it even more difficult to contain in bump and run tight coverage situations.

Langston is working on a top defensive performers list.
