PORT CHARLOTTE The Rays optioned RHP Dale Thayer to Triple Durham before today’s game and reassigned Heath Rollins to minor league camp after the game, leaving just two candidates in camp for the final spot in the bullpen.
Joaquin Benoit pitched the first two innings today against the Red Sox and didn’t look good. He hit the first batter he faced and walked the second. He seemed to have his fastball but not his fastball command.
Benoit’s line: 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K, HBP.
Mike Ekstrom is the other inhouse candidate.
Rollins pitched 2 2/3 innings against the Red Sox. He walked two, allowed five hits and two runs.
Meanwhile, Rays VP of baseball Andrew Friedman looks for help outside the organization.
It’s hard to imagine the Rays would trade for bullpen help, unless they move INF/OF Elliot Johnson, who is out of options. It’s more likely any help from outside will come over the weekend when teams try to sneak players through waivers.
