After knocking off Miramar High 31-20 to win the Class 8A state championship Saturday night in Orlando’s Citrus Bowl, Plant players and coaches gathered in their locker room to reflect on the incredible season they had.
Not many pundits gave the Panthers a chance to accomplish what they did this fall. They were a team of relatively few Division I-A recruits and were unsure who the starting quarterback was at the end of the summer. But there they were Saturday night, holding their fourth state championship trophy in the past six years.
Coach Robert Weiner said no group of players were more deserving of the title and said there was something about the “goodness” of this squad that just couldn’t be stopped. And that goodness was never more evident than when Weiner and his players took time in their postgame celebrations to give special thanks to Panthers asistant coach Billy Minahan, who suffered the tragic loss of his 21-year-old daughter to a fatal illness last summer.
