Alonso baseball player Jose Fernandez has accepted an invitation to the 2010 Aflac All-American Baseball Classic, Ravens coach Landy Faedo said Thursday.
The high school all-star game, which features 38 of the nation’s top rising seniors in an East vs. West format, will be played Aug. 15 at PETCO Park in San Diego.
Fernandez, a right-handed pitcher/designated hitter, has been a staple for Alonso since joining the team as a sophomore after leaving Cuba for the United States. He was the Ravens’ top pitcher this past season, going 10-1 with a 0.87 ERA and striking out 101 batters in 72 1/3 innings. He also hit .408 with five home runs and 29 RBIs while helping Alonso make a second consecutive appearance in the Class 6A state tournament.
As a sophomore, Fernandez helped Alonso win the Class 6A state title. He tossed 6 2/3 innings in that championship-game victory over Miami Columbus to earn the win.
Faedo said Fernandez also received an invitation to the Under Armour All-America Game, which will be played at Chicago’s Wrigley Field the same weekend as the Aflac game. Fernandez originally committed to the Under Armour event, Faedo said, but has since opted for the other.
This is the fifth consecutive year Hillsborough County has had a player selected for the Aflac All-American Baseball Classic. Previous selections were Hillsborough’s Michael Burgess (2006), Riverview’s Anthony Ferrara (2007), Plant’s Mychal Givens (2008) and Tampa Catholic’s Shane Rowland (2009).
