Four months have passed since the Alonso baseball team hoisted the Class 6A state championship trophy in the air down in Port St. Lucie’s Digital Domain Park.
Thursday morning, the celebration continued as the Ravens were honored by the Board of County Commissioners during a regularly scheduled meeting inside the second-floor boardroom at The County Center.
“Congratulations on one heck of a season,” commission member Ken Hagan said. “I’ve said for a number of years and I’m sure everyone here knows this, the best baseball in the entire county is right here in Hillsborough County and that goes from our youth sports teams we recognized a couple meetings ago, the North Tampa Broncos team won the World Series, the Palma Ceia Little League team we’re going to recognize coming up and there’s not a better example of excellence than the Alonso Ravens baseball team.
“Coach Faedo has developed a powerhouse of a program here.”
With that, Hagan read off the list of district and tournament championships the program has won: 2007, 2009, 2010 Tony Saladino Tournament titles; 2007, 2010 district championships; 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011 regional championships; and 2009 and 2011 state titles.
“It was an unbelievable season,” Alonso coach Landy Faedo told the board. “Something we knew we’d be able to accomplish with the quality of players we have. Everything has to go to the kids. It’s amazing what we asked them to do for us and their commitment to the program.”
After the meeting, Faedo laughed, saying he didn’t think he’d have to speak.
“We’re happy to be noticed. Like I said in there, it’s nice all the hard work they put into buying into our system and everything,” Faedo said. “For them to win a state championship and be recognized, it’s everybody’s goal. Not everybody is fortunate enough and there have been a lot of great teams that haven’t won a championship. We’ve been fortunate enough to not only win one, but win two. So we’re very happy and humble about it.”
