TAMPA – Any dreams the Bucs might have had of watching Jared Allen sack opposing quarterbacks for them were shattered late Tuesday when the Minnesota Vikings finalized a trade agreement for Allen with the Kansas City Chiefs.
The trade is expected to be announced today by the Vikings, who spent the weekend wooing and apparently wowing Allen, who led the NFL in sacks last year with 15.5.
Terms of the deal for Allen were not known but the Vikings are expected to surrender their first-round pick in this year’s draft (No. 17 overall) and at least one other pick (possibly a second rounder) to the Chiefs.
The NFL Network reported late Tuesday that the Vikings would surrender their 2008 first-round pick and both of their 2008 third-round picks (Nos. 73 and 82 overall) in this draft for Allen.
Also unknown were the terms of the contract agreement the Vikings reached with Allen earlier in the day Tuesday. It is believed, however, that Allen has agreed to a six-year deal that is worth approximately $70 million and includes approximately $31 million in guarantees.
The Bucs were one of a handful of teams that had interest in possibly pursuing Allen, but after visiting with the Vikings over the weekend he canceled his tentative plans to visit the Bucs facility.
Allen was slapped with the franchise tag by the Chiefs but the tag was not exclusive, which meant Allen could shop his services on a limited basis. He began that process a couple weeks ago and the Vikings and Bucs emerged as his two most ardent pursuers last weekend.
The Vikings were always considered the more likely team to land Allen, should the Chiefs agree to move him, because they owned a higher first-round draft choice (the Bucs first pick is No. 20 overall) as well as two third-round selections in this year’s draft.
The Bucs were hurt by the fact they have just five draft picks overall this year.

I still think we should go for Lito Sheppard. he is worth a 2nd round pick. he is better then any 2nd round corner we may pick up in the draft.

This is a good thing. According to ESPN, the Vikings gave up their 1st and 2 3rd’s to get Allen plus they’re paying him $74 million dollars. To give up 3 players in 1 draft (all of which could make an immediate impact) is a very steep price and one that we couldn’t afford to give. I’m glad that this is over and now we can concentrate on the draft. And any of you guys out there that still think we can get Chad Johnson, please stop, there is no way we can get him for less than what the Vikings paid for Allen. So if you think that surrendering 3 of our 5 picks in this year’s draft is a good thing, then please have your head examined.

Allen would have been nice but I think this could end up being a blessing in disguise for the Bucs we have too many holes as it is and defensive end isn’t as major a need as WR, CB, and DT.
